Monty Python’s SPAMALOT

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Can you find me a shrubby?
Would you know how to defeat the killer rabbit of Caerbannog?
Is it just a flesh wound?
Are you able to tell me the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow – African or European?
Does your father smell of elderberries?

If your answer is hearty not-dead-yet aye, then you may continue on your quest…I mean read of this review.

If you are slightly puzzled, then I suggest you go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

Cirque Alice

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ever since her introduction to the world in 1865 by Lewis Carrol, Alice and her adventures in Wonderland have captured the imagination of children and adults alike through books, film, musicals, songs, ballets, operas, television shows, statues, video games and even stamps.

Cirque Alice now adds circus, acrobatic, dance, comedy and visual storytelling to the list, brought to the stage by producers Tim Lawson and Simon Painter (The Illusionists, Circus 1903 and Le Noir!).

Just like Alice’s adventures through Wonderland, Cirque Alice is a fantastical adventure, filled with merriment, marvels and miraculous moments.

Your Song

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Whether you are an Elton John fan or not, there is no mistaking his footprint on the music and pop-culture landscape over the past several decades. An EGOT winner with 300 million in record sales, hundreds of millions raised for his AIDS foundation and countless other records and accolades to his name.

Most people can remember the first time they heard Elton, or an Elton song attached to a particular memory, or even their own Elton moment. And this is what Your Song embraces – the times in our lives that intersected with Elton’s music.

Your Song is not a tribute concert, however it’s a tribute to the songwriting genius that is Elton John and his incredible talent to create music that connects us, moves us, motivates us, celebrates us, makes us smile, laugh, cry and dance.

ART

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth”. Pablo Picasso

What starts as a puzzlement by one friend and indifference by another to a friend’s recent art purchase rapidly turns into an examination of self, self-worth, the meaning of friendship and what binds people together.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

“This wall of disparity between us, Frankie, we gotta break it down. So the only space left between us is just us.”

Wrapped up in a complex, circular-collision, complicated post-coital conversation between Frankie and Johnny this is the crux of their ‘relationship’.

The 35th Annual Great Debate (MICF)

Reviewed April 2025 for Theatre Matters.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

For the 35th time, international and local comedy superstars gathered their wits, wrote and presented their arguments, did some light opposite team roasting along the way – all with the aim of winning the Melbourne International Comedy Festival annual debate, with the topic for this year being “That social media is good, actually”.

Buffy Revamped (MICF)

Reviewed April 2025 for Theatre Matters.

I’ve been writing for Theatre Matters (previously Theatrepeople) for nearly 10 years and have written close to 50 reviews in that time.

This week something happened that has never happened before. Two reviewers went and reviewed the same show.

Because the other reviewer submitted their review before me – by a matter of minutes I’m told – they rightly couldn’t publish mine.

But I *know* some people are waiting for it and I like writing and sharing my thoughts, so I have permission to post my review here.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be writing a Melbourne International Comedy Festival review show about Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but here we are.
